Built from the fuzz circuit inside Aclam's own 1966 VOX UL730 amplifier, this analog pedal preserves the distinctive gated, spluttery character created when a component in that particular amp drifted out of specification. Rather than correcting the unusual response, Aclam recreated it and added controls that move well beyond the sound of the original circuit.
The Bias control ranges from the underbiased character of Aclam's reference amplifier through the more open response of the original UL730 design and beyond. A dedicated Tone control shapes the fuzz for different guitars, amplifiers, and signal chains, while Volume sets the overall output level.
New Old Stock Philips OA200 diodes match the diode type used in the original VOX UL series. The circuit is relatively unaffected by buffers, allowing flexible placement throughout a pedalboard rather than demanding the first position in the signal chain. Relay-based true bypass keeps the dry path out of the circuit when the effect is disengaged.
